What Is an Inode Limit, and Why Does It Fill Up When the Disk Is Empty?

Hosting plans list an inode limit next to disk space. If you get a "quota exceeded" warning while half your disk is free, the inode count is almost certainly the reason.

What exactly does an inode count?

On Linux file systems every file and every folder uses one inode. Size doesn't matter: a 1 KB cache file and a 1 GB backup archive each count as one inode. Every message in your mailboxes is usually a separate file too, so it is also an inode.

So the inode count answers the question "how many pieces are in this account?" For example, the 100K inode limit on our plans means roughly 100,000 files and folders in total.

Where inodes go fastest

  • Cache folders: page caches, thumbnail plugins and template caches can create thousands of small files.
  • Mailboxes: inboxes that haven't been cleaned for years, and spam folders in particular.
  • Old installs: a second WordPress installed for testing, or an abandoned subdomain.
  • Extracted backups: old site copies unzipped on the server and forgotten.
  • Session and log files: some applications write a session file per visit and never clean up.

How to find the folder responsible

The Disk Usage tool in cPanel shows folder sizes, but for inodes you need the number of files. A practical approach is to open the large folders one by one in File Manager and look at how many files they hold. Tens of thousands of files in a cache folder is a common find.

On WordPress, check wp-content/cache and the plugins' own cache folders first. Clearing the cache with the plugin's own "purge all" button is safer than deleting files by hand.

Safe ways to reduce your inode count

  1. Remove unused test installs, after downloading a backup.
  2. Archive and delete old messages; empty spam and trash folders.
  3. Download any .zip and .tar.gz backups on the server to your computer and remove them from the server.
  4. Enable automatic removal of expired cache in your caching plugin.
  5. Don't run two caching plugins that do the same job.

When does upgrading make sense?

If you are still close to the limit after cleaning up, your site is growing. A store with many product images, or an account hosting several sites, is more comfortable on a plan with a higher inode limit. Each web hosting plan states its inode limit clearly. What the other resources mean is covered in CPU, RAM and I/O limits.
