How Much Monthly Traffic Will Your Site Use? A Simple Calculation
The "monthly traffic" on a hosting plan is the total amount of data your server sends to visitors. Most small sites never get near the limit, but an image-heavy site or a page that offers downloads can use it faster than expected. You don't need complex tools to estimate your needs.
The basic formula
Monthly traffic ≈ monthly visitors × pages per visit × average page size
To find your average page size, open your site in the browser, open the Network tab in the developer tools and reload the page. The total transferred data is shown at the bottom. It is usually between a few hundred KB and a few MB.
A worked example
Take a site with 10,000 visitors a month, where each visitor views 3 pages on average and each page transfers 2 MB:
10,000 × 3 × 2 MB = 60,000 MB, or about 60 GB.
Adding around 50% for bots, search engine crawlers and unexpected spikes is sensible. That gives a need of about 90 GB.
Factors that lower the number
- Browser caching: returning visitors don't download the logo, CSS and JavaScript again.
- A CDN: if a CDN serves your files, most of that data never leaves your server.
- Optimised images: images converted to WebP or AVIF make pages noticeably lighter. See the image optimisation guide.
Factors that raise it
- PDF, video or software files downloaded directly from the server.
- High-resolution photos uploaded without compression.
- Malicious bots crawling your pages constantly.
- Your images being embedded on other sites.
What happens if you hit the limit?
Once the limit is exceeded, service on the account can be restricted until the next period starts or the plan is upgraded. Checking traffic usage in cPanel's statistics once a month is a good habit. If you keep getting close to the limit, move to a larger plan or move large files to a separate storage service.
Choosing a plan
Keeping your estimate below half of the plan limit leaves room to grow. Our web hosting and WordPress hosting plans state their monthly traffic clearly. If you're unsure, the hosting advisor does this calculation for you from the visitor numbers you enter. The other resources are explained in our guide to choosing your first host.
