Subdomain setup helper

Which record a subdomain needs depends on where it should go. The helper builds the A, AAAA or CNAME record for your case and checks for clashing records under the same name, wildcards, whether the target actually resolves and CAA records that could affect SSL.

Loading the tool…

This tool runs in your browser and needs JavaScript.

How to use it

  1. Enter the domain, the subdomain prefix and the target type; for an external service or IP enter the target value.
  2. Press the run button. Results are listed separately as definite problems, possible issues, unverifiable and passed; each finding shows what was found, what it means, the fix and the limits of the check.
  3. Apply the suggested fix and run the tool again to confirm. Use “Copy result” to add the report to a support ticket.

Example

When connecting shop.yourdomain.com to Shopify, the tool prepares the CNAME record and reminds you to also add the domain in the Shopify admin. The “Example” button in the form fills in a scenario like this and shows the result immediately.

Scope and limits

No record is created. The current state and the target's resolution are read from public resolvers; a random name is queried to detect wildcards.

Your inputs are not added to the address bar or passed to analytics, and result pages are not indexed by search engines.
