Name server change checklist

A name server change moves the whole DNS zone to another provider; every record forgotten in the new zone stops a service. The tool takes a copy of your discoverable records, verifies that the new name servers resolve, warns if DNSSEC is on and lists the steps with timing.

This tool runs in your browser and needs JavaScript.

How to use it

  1. Enter your domain and the name servers you are moving to; tick what the domain is used for.
  2. Press the run button. Results are listed separately as definite problems, possible issues, unverifiable and passed; each finding shows what was found, what it means, the fix and the limits of the check.
  3. Apply the suggested fix and run the tool again to confirm. Use “Copy result” to add the report to a support ticket.

Example

If the domain has a DS record and you move to another provider, the tool puts removing the DS before the switch at the top of the list. The “Example” button in the form fills in a scenario like this and shows the result immediately.

Scope and limits

No setting is changed. Data is read from public resolvers; registrar settings and the zone at the new provider are not visible to this tool.

Your inputs are not added to the address bar or passed to analytics, and result pages are not indexed by search engines.
