.htpasswd generator
Basic HTTP authentication is the fastest way to hide an admin area or a staging site from visitors. The tool prepares the .htpasswd line from a user name and password plus the .htaccess code for the folder. The password is never sent to a server and a random salt is used each time.
Loading the tool…
This tool runs in your browser and needs JavaScript.
How to use it
- Enter the user name, password and folder to protect.
- Press the run button. Results are listed separately as definite problems, possible issues, unverifiable and passed; each finding shows what was found, what it means, the fix and the limits of the check.
- Apply the suggested fix and run the tool again to confirm. Use “Copy result” to add the report to a support ticket.
Example
If you keep a copy of a site under /test before launch, lock the folder with a password before search engines or curious visitors find it. The “Example” button in the form fills in a scenario like this and shows the result immediately.
Scope and limits
The password is hashed with APR1-MD5 in your browser; the plain password goes nowhere and is not in the copied result.
Your inputs are not added to the address bar or passed to analytics, and result pages are not indexed by search engines.
