MD5, SHA-1 and SHA-256 hash generator

A hash is a fingerprint of data: change one character and the result changes completely. Comparing hashes tells you whether a downloaded file or a copied key is intact. The tool computes five algorithms in your browser and checks a value you provide for a match.

This tool runs in your browser and needs JavaScript.

How to use it

  1. Type the text; optionally add a hash to compare.
  2. Press the run button. Results are listed separately as definite problems, possible issues, unverifiable and passed; each finding shows what was found, what it means, the fix and the limits of the check.
  3. Apply the suggested fix and run the tool again to confirm. Use “Copy result” to add the report to a support ticket.

Example

Compare a published SHA-256 with a known text to check for copy mistakes. The “Example” button in the form fills in a scenario like this and shows the result immediately.

Scope and limits

SHA values use the browser's Web Crypto API and MD5 a local implementation; your text is sent nowhere.

Your inputs are not added to the address bar or passed to analytics, and result pages are not indexed by search engines.
