TTL planner

The TTL sets how long a DNS answer may stay cached. For a seamless switch you must lower the TTL at least one old-TTL period before the change. The planner builds this timeline in your time zone, tells you the earliest safe time if you are late and reminds you that name server changes work differently.

This tool runs in your browser and needs JavaScript.

How to use it

  1. Choose the record's current TTL, the short TTL for the switch and the time of the change.
  2. Press the run button. Results are listed separately as definite problems, possible issues, unverifiable and passed; each finding shows what was found, what it means, the fix and the limits of the check.
  3. Apply the suggested fix and run the tool again to confirm. Use “Copy result” to add the report to a support ticket.

Example

If an A record with a 4-hour TTL changes tomorrow at 10:00, the tool shows that you must lower it to 300 seconds by about 05:30 that morning. The “Example” button in the form fills in a scenario like this and shows the result immediately.

Scope and limits

The calculation runs in your browser. Times are in your browser's time zone; no DNS record is changed.

Your inputs are not added to the address bar or passed to analytics, and result pages are not indexed by search engines.
