Chmod (file permission) calculator
File permissions decide who may read, write and execute a file. Wrong permissions cause both 403 errors and malware infections. The tool converts between numeric and symbolic notation, gives the recommended value for each file type and flags risky settings such as 777.
Loading the tool…
This tool runs in your browser and needs JavaScript.
How to use it
- Type the numeric mode or tick the boxes, and choose the file type.
- Press the run button. Results are listed separately as definite problems, possible issues, unverifiable and passed; each finding shows what was found, what it means, the fix and the limits of the check.
- Apply the suggested fix and run the tool again to confirm. Use “Copy result” to add the report to a support ticket.
Example
Before giving the uploads folder the 777 a plugin suggests, see why the tool recommends 755. The “Example” button in the form fills in a scenario like this and shows the result immediately.
Scope and limits
Calculated in your browser; your server files are not accessed. You can also apply it in cPanel File Manager via right-click › “Change Permissions”.
Your inputs are not added to the address bar or passed to analytics, and result pages are not indexed by search engines.
