How to write SEO-friendly URLs

A page address (slug) helps people and search engines grasp a page's topic at a glance. A good address is short, readable and permanent.

Short and descriptive

An address like “/how-to-choose-web-hosting” says what the page is about even when shared, unlike “/page.php?id=482”. Use the words that carry the main idea, not the whole title; 3–6 words are usually enough.

Accented letters

Browsers can show letters such as ü or ş, but copied addresses turn them into codes like “%C5%9F” that nobody can read. Simplifying them (ü→u or ue, ş→s) is a common, practical choice.

Hyphen or underscore?

Google recommends hyphens to separate words; words joined with underscores may be read as one. Avoid capitals, since some servers treat upper- and lower-case addresses as different pages.

Leave out years and dates

Addresses such as “…-2026-guide” go stale when you update the content each year. Keep the year in the title and out of the address so it never has to change.

Use a 301 redirect when an address changes

If you change a live page's address without a permanent (301) redirect from the old one, incoming links and rankings are lost.

The slug generator creates suitable addresses from your titles; for address changes use the redirect rule builder.
